Description:
Twin-whip antenna assembly which provides broadband coverage
for general purpose use with military communications
equipment in the 10-30 MHz frequency range. It is
omnidirectional, vertically polarized, and is particularly
well suited for prolonged use in marine shipboard
environments.
The assembly consists of
two 12 foot whip antennas, AS-4038/SRC and AS-4039/ SRC; an
impedance matching network, CU-2155/SRC, and a 2-wire feed
assembly for connecting the whips to the network.
Each whip has an aluminum
radiator section, an integral fiberglass base insulator and
a mounting base. The radiator is square in cross section,
tapering from 11 inches at the base to 7 - 1/2 inches at the
top.
The array is assembled by
mounting the two whips vertically, 5 - 1/2 feet apart, on a
flat mounting surface provided by the installing activity.
The matching network, enclosed in a weatherproof aluminum
housing, mounts atop the same surface midway between the
antennas. Each whip connects to the network feed insulator
using the wire-rope feed assembly. A coaxial cable connector
on the side of the network housing provides connection to
the associated communications equipment.
The matching network
consists of a fixed-tuned inductor element which optimizes
the VSWR characteristics of the antenna over the 10-30 MHz
band. For typical shipboard installations a VSWR of 5:1 or
less, on 50 ohms, is maintained over the entire operating
band. Other network values or electrical configurations can
be supplied to meet special installation requirements. The
antenna assembly was designed for use on Navy ships and can
be installed either on fixed or tilting platforms. A
hydraulically operated tilt platform, Model CA-1120, is
available for installations where tilting is required. |
