Description: Twin-whip antenna assembly which provides high-power, broadband coverage for military communications equipment in the 4-12 MHz frequency band. It is omnidirectional, vertically polarized, and is particularly suited for prolonged use in marine shipboard environments.

The assembly consists of two 35 foot whip antennas, AS-4014/U; an impedance matching network, CU-2151/U; and an interconnecting wire-rope feed assembly. Each whip has a 3-section aluminum radiator, a fiberglass base insulator and a mounting base. The radiator is square in cross section and tapers from 11 inches at the base to 1 inch at the top. CRES shot containers at the top and within each radiator effectively damp natural vibrations of the structure at frequencies encountered aboard Navy vessels.

The two whips mount vertically, 10 feet apart, atop a platform provided by the installing activity. The matching network, enclosed in a weatherproof aluminum housing, mounts beneath the platform surface midway between the antennas. Each whip connects to the network feed insulator using the wire-rope feed assembly. Coaxial connection to the associated communications equipment is made by means of a 31/8 inch EIA flange at the network box.

The antenna assembly was designed for installation on DD-963 Class destroyers. On these ships the assembly is located on a platform on the side of the aft stack. Fixed-tuned, inductor/capacitor matching elements are provided in the network box to optimize its VSWR characteristics over the 4-12 MHz band. A VSWR of 3:1 or less, on 50 ohms, is maintained over the entire band. For other mounting sites these characteristics will vary and other network values or electrical configurations can be supplied to meet the installer's requirements.
