Description:
Twin-whip antenna group installed on DDG-51 Class ships that
provides high-power, broadband coverage for military
communications equipment in the 10 - 30 MHz frequency band.
It is omnidirectional, vertically polarized and is
particularly suited for prolonged use in marine shipboard
environments.
The assembly consists of
two 18-foot whip antennas, (AS-3773 A/U); an impedance
matching network, and an interconnecting wire-rope feed
assembly, MX-18329/SRC. Each whip has a single section
aluminum radiator, a fiberglass base insulator, and a
mounting base. The spun aluminum radiators taper from 8
inches at the base to 4 inches at the top. A dynamic damper
at the top and within the radiator section effectively damps
natu ral vibrations of the structure at frequencies
encountered above Navy vessels.
The two whips are mounted
5.5 feet apart atop a platform on the ship's forward stack.
The matching network, enclosed in a weatherproof aluminum
housing, mounts on the platform surface midway between the
antennas. Each whip connects to the network feed insulators
using the wire-rope feed assembly.
Fixed-tuned,
inductor/capacitor, matching elements are provided in the
network box to optimize its VSWR characteristics over the 10
- 30 MHz band for the antenna group on the DDG-51 Class of
ships. For other mounting sites, these characteristics will
vary and other values or electrical configurations can be
supplied to meet the installer's requirements. Coaxial
connection to a transmission line from associated equipment
is made by means of 1.625-inch, EIA, end terminal, 90°
elbow at the network box. |
